A residential water heater serviced by APEX Home
Plain language

The part that corrodes so your tank doesn't.

Inside every tank water heater hangs a sacrificial anode rod, a metal rod whose entire job is to corrode on purpose. Water attacks the most reactive metal it can find, and the anode rod volunteers, so the corrosion eats the rod instead of the steel walls of your tank. It's one of the smartest, humblest parts in your whole house.

Here's the catch: once the rod is fully consumed, the water moves on to its next target, and that's the tank itself. From that point the tank starts rusting from the inside, and that's the beginning of the end for the unit. The good news is that the fix is simple, inexpensive, and completely on your schedule..... you just swap the rod before it's gone.

The 5-year rule

Why year 5 is the number to remember.

Celina's hard water is rich in minerals, and mineral-heavy water consumes anode rods faster than the national average. In my experience walking North Texas homes, right around 5 years is the safe swap window: late enough that you get full value from the original rod, early enough that the tank walls were never exposed. If you run a water softener, plan on swapping sooner, because softened water is even hungrier for anode metal.

A fresh rod every few years is the single best-value move you can make for a tank water heater. It's a $199 part swap that protects a four-figure appliance and keeps your hot water boring, in the best possible way.

What happens on the visit

One visit, start to finish.

Controlled drain-down

I power down the heater, relieve the pressure, and drain just enough water to do the job cleanly. No mess, no surprises, no flooded utility closet.

Old rod out, even the stubborn ones

Anode rods that have sat for years can put up a fight. I come prepared with the right tools and leverage to break them loose without stressing the tank.

New flexible segmented rod, included

Your $199 covers the new rod itself. I install a flexible segmented rod, which folds in section by section, so low ceilings, closets, and tight attic corners are never a problem.

Full condition check

While I'm there, the whole heater gets looked over: connections, valves, signs of sediment, overall health. You'll know exactly where your unit stands.

Documented in the APEX app

Your water heater's age, model, and condition get logged in the APEX app, so the next time anyone asks "how old is your water heater?", the answer is in your pocket.

Why it's worth it

Years of extra life, one relaxed appointment.

A tank that keeps a healthy anode rod inside it simply lasts longer. You get more years of quiet, reliable hot water, you choose when the eventual replacement happens instead of being surprised by it, and your home's records stay complete in the app. Plan for about a 2-hour visit..... in practice I usually finish sooner.

Good to know

A few honest answers.

How do I know if my home has a tank water heater?
If you have a tall cylinder, usually in the garage, attic, or a utility closet, that's a tank. If you have a compact wall-hung box instead, that's a tankless unit, and what it needs is our descaling flush rather than an anode swap.
What if I'm not sure when the rod was last changed?
If you don't know, it almost certainly hasn't been. Most rods are never touched after the day the heater was installed. If your heater is around 5 years old or more, this visit is right on time.
What if my old rod won't come out?
Some rods are genuinely stubborn after years in place. That's part of the job and part of the price..... I bring the tools to handle it, and if anything about your unit makes the swap unwise, I'll tell you honestly before touching it.
How long does the visit take?
We set aside about 2 hours so nothing is rushed and the condition check gets done properly. In practice we usually finish sooner.
What if I'm not happy?
Then it's free. If you're not 100% happy with the visit, you get a full refund, no questions asked.
